I swear it happens. every. time… I run out of activities to occupy the little but have zero energy to engage in creative play. I notice our playdough is looking a little… creature from the black lagoon-ish. We whip up a new batch of this simple playdough together in 5 minutes and Voila! The tiny human is occupied squishing and shaping the dough for at least an hour. A GLORIOUS. PEACEFUL. HOUR.
It’s Super Easy!
If you are intimidated by the thought of making your own playdough, let me tell you it is as easy as boiling water. Have you made mac and cheese from a box? You can do this. You probably have *most* of the ingredients for this simple playdough in your kitchen. For the other 3 I got them from Amazon in bulk and they will literally last till my toddler is turning into an angsty pre-teen.
Why not just order pre-made, you ask?
- Letting your toddler help make it is an activity in itself.
- It lasts forrrever! Or at least a few months, as long as you don’t leave it out or live in a super humid place.
- You can customize: Pink? Glittery? Delicious smelling? Check.
Let’s do this:
SIMPLE PLAYDOUGH RECIPE:
- 2 Cups Cheap White Flour
- 1/2 C Salt
- 2 Tablespoons Cream Of Tartar
- 2 Tablespoons Cheap Vegetable Oil
- 2 Teaspoons Glycerine
- 1.5 Cups Boiling Water
- Essential oil (peppermint is our fave)
- Gel food coloring (I’ve found the gel food colors to be more vibrant)
Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Bring the water to a boil, turn off heat and add vegetable oil and glycerine. Add essential oil and food coloring to water if desired. Pour liquid mixture into dry ingredients and stir. After stirring till mostly mixed and cool enough, I let my little knead with her hands with me. Knead for a little while until the mixture is no longer sticky. If it seems dry add more glycerine as needed. Simple playdough!
Store in an airtight container and it should last for months. Once the playdough has become dried out or has collected to much pet fur/dirt, we often take ours outside for one last play session. Bringing old materials into new environments gives them instant fresh appeal!
